Celebrating the Backbone of Every Trek

Every trek up Mount Kilimanjaro is a testament to teamwork, determination, and skill. Yet, the true heroes behind these journeys are often those who work quietly in the background—the porters.

At Nature Discovery, we take immense pride in our porters and mountain crew, whose unmatched dedication and professionalism are the foundation of every successful expedition.

Specialists in Every Role

Our team is not just a group of workers; it’s a well-oiled machine of specialists who understand the mountain and each other. Many have been part of our regular team for years, forming a bond that ensures seamless collaboration and camaraderie on every trek. Their pride in their roles, no matter how big or small, is evident in the glowing feedback we receive from our guests.

"Everyone who supported us on the Kilimanjaro trek was kind, caring, generous, professional, happy and supportive. Godwin and Robert were fantastic and knowledgeable guides and were always focused on keeping us happy and safe. Michael and Hamis ensured we were always well fed and were cheerful from the first coffee at 6am! Ernest and the entire team had our camp set up and ready for us every time we arrived at a new campsite as well as managing to get a fantastic hot shower organised. Joel patiently followed us with the safety equipment for our full journey and was always walking closely behind us, smiling and helping to keep us happy.”

Each crew member has a specific role to play, from the Mountain Chef, who crafts nutritious meals to fuel our climbers, to the Campsite Manager, who ensures every camp is efficiently set up and adheres to Leave No Trace principles. Our specialized training programs cover food preparation, hygiene management, and equipment handling, far exceeding industry standards. This dedication to excellence creates a world-class experience for our trekkers.

Porters: The Heart and Soul of the Journey

Porters are the backbone of Kilimanjaro expeditions, carrying trekkers’ gear across challenging terrains with strength and determination. But they are far more than labourers—they are skilled, friendly, and professional individuals who genuinely care about the success of each trek. Their ever-present smiles and mutual respect for one another create a warm and welcoming atmosphere that our guests continually praise.

Ethical Treatment: Leading by Example

Sadly, porters have historically been exploited by the tourism industry, but we are committed to rewriting that narrative. Partnering with the Kilimanjaro Porter’s Assistance Project (KPAP), we have set the benchmark for fair treatment, transparency, and ethical practices. From fair wages and adequate tips to providing nutritious meals and top-quality climbing gear, we go above and beyond to ensure our porters are happy, healthy, and secure.

We are proud to have earned a KPAP score of 99.3%, a testament to our commitment. Our porters stand out on the mountain, not only for their professional-grade uniforms and gear but also for their genuine happiness and pride in their work.

Continuous Training and Development

Every year, we invest in training our crew to refine their skills. Our Mountain Chefs, for instance, learn to prepare specialized menus, including vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options, while our waitstaff undergo training in hygiene and service excellence. From porters to campsite managers, every team member is equipped with the knowledge and tools to perform at their best, ensuring that both trekkers and the environment are cared for.

A Better Future for Porters

Our work with KPAP has helped transform the porter experience on Kilimanjaro. From providing weatherproof uniforms and sturdy boots to ensuring access to medical care if they fall ill or sustain injuries, we treat our porters with the same respect and care as we do our guests. This approach not only improves their working conditions but also elevates the trekking experience for everyone involved.

Gratitude and Respect

The work of a porter is as challenging as it is rewarding. They carry heavy loads, navigate rugged paths, and often work in harsh weather conditions, all while maintaining a cheerful and professional demeanour. Their dedication, strength, and teamwork inspire us every day.

When you trek with Nature Discovery, you’re not just climbing a mountain—you’re part of a journey powered by the finest crew on Kilimanjaro. We’re proud to honour our porters as the heart of our expeditions and thank them for their unwavering commitment to excellence.

Together, we climb higher, stronger, and better.
